The beauty of Hua Hin is that once you arrive in Bangkok, a secondary flight is not required to get to your destination.
Located around 200km south of Bangkok, Hua Hin is most easily reached by private car (approx. $80 AUD one way), but is also serviced by rail. A much loved holiday destination of the royals, it lacks that touristy hustle and bustle that is present in much of Thailand's beachside resorts, yet offers the comforts, food and activities that people travel to Thailand for.
Singapore is interesting in that it offers the oriental charm of the east, with the comfort of the west. Flight times from Australia, mean it is accessible for a special long weekend away, or it can easily be added on to a trip to Europe or the Middle East by taking advantage of a stopover. It is a compact destination with many attractions to visit within Singapore city and the outerlying state.
However you come to decide on your trip to Singapore, it won't be complete without these essential Singaporean experiences!
I was looking for an adventure after a big break up. I felt the need to achieve something for myself, so when a TV show came on featuring Nepal, I firmly decided that is where I was going to go. All gung ho, I visited the travel agent that very day to book it in. I was going to hike the Annapurna circuit. It would involve quite a bit of training, but I was ice skating competitively and had friends who did long walks, so I was confident that I would be ok.
Like all things in life, it didn't quite turn out how I expected, when I tripped myself over on the ice a week out from our state championships for ice-skating and badly tore the PCL ligament in my knee. Advised that I was in no state to do any sort of hiking anytime soon, I rearranged my trip for Easter and decided on one with a little less walking and a little more sightseeing.
I didn't intend to be a solo traveler. It was my second year into teaching and I was searching for some winter sun. I'll admit I went on to the Air Asia website with the mindset of, 'where is the cheapest place I can go for 10 days to escape the winter.' It turns out it was Malaysia, which wasn't half bad, as it was somewhere I had always wanted to visit.
Thinking a girl's trip might be nice, I asked a friend if she would be keen and before I knew it we were all booked in for a trip to Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi, staying at some seriously luxe resorts with the plan to take some tours and drink cocktails by the pool.
When I booked the trip I was in a relationship and expecting to go on a girl's trip, but by the time it came to depart, I was single and travelling alone. Despite some reservations about traveling alone, I felt I would have a safe trip in Malaysia, and a real urge to set out anyway. This is how I became an accidental solo traveler and realised there are many reasons to love solo travel.
