There are blackberries everywhere in our part of the UK. Unlike back at home, where they are seen as a pest and sprayed, you can still go blackberrying in the UK. I've been keeping my eye on the bushes when we go for afternoon walks. Some were ripe and ready to be picked before I headed off to Spain, but I knew, so long as no one else got there first, there would be lots of ripe berries to pick on my return.
My first piece of advice during blackberry season is to keep a small bag with you. The first time I saw a bumper crop I was left carrying them home in my hat and it now has the stains to prove it! You may also want to bring a berry picking partner. My husband Pete is a reluctant berry picker, but he is much better at getting into tricky spots than I am, and two hands makes it much quicker work! You may also want to get off the main trails where birds and people have already gotten to the best berries.
A bumper crop
I wasn't expecting to go blackberrying, but like I said the bushes are everywhere. We were actually at the Lynnton raceway in Kent to watch Pete's cousin race in rally x when I spotted a large blackberry bush full of large ripe berries. I managed to collect a bag full and turn them into a delicious blackberry and apple pie for a friend's housewarming.
On another afternoon walk I spotted a prime patch in a odd block of land that could only be reached by jumping over the fence. Over Pete went and we collected our best berries to date. They were turned into a delicious blackberry and apple crumble that went smashingly with a large dollop of madagascan vanilla custard.
I've spotted a few more areas that are promising and will be visiting them over the next few days to fill my freezer up.
To me blackberrying reminds me of my childhood when we did have a blackberry patch near home and would spend an hour or two picking them, getting prickled and then eating blackberry everything for months on end afterwards. I love a bit of nostalgia and blackberrying in the UK has certainly been nostalgic for me.
